You got the acceptance letter for your new college. You have made contact with your roommate. You have all the paperwork and know all the places around campus. You are ready to bid farewell to all your loved ones at home. But are you prepared to face what comes after that?
It is that feeling you get when you start missing your parents, siblings, your room and everything else back at home. This kind of emotion is what we call homesickness. You may think that it is troubling, but we’re here to tell you that it is natural to feel that way.
You had thought about the fact that it would come to this, but feeling it is a whole lot different. You should be able to deal with this before it gets in the way of your studies.
If you are having a tough time with it on your own, then allow us to console you. Make use of the following remedies to cure college homesickness you have of your blues.
1. It is normal to feel this way
You may feel that what you’re going through shouldn’t even be happening, but the thing is that there is nothing wrong with you. As we said before, it is natural to feel this way. You have spent most of your life with the people you grew up with and are now spending four years at college without them by your side.
Well, we’re here to let you know that you’re not the only one who feels that way. Other students are going through the same phase that you’re going through, if not worse. You just need time to get used to the new place. Accepting the fact that you are away for a better cause is a good way to deal with this.
2. Get outside
You can Skype, text or chat with your loved ones back at home at any time, but it might not be for the best when going through homesickness. As a matter of fact, it will only make you long for home without giving the new place a chance. You wouldn’t want your folks at home to think you’re a big baby and a quitter do you?
Make the effort to explore the world that you’re going to be in for the next four years. Try to get out of your dorm or apartment room and try to adjust to your new surroundings.
3. Connect with other people
Go visit the campus coffee shop, the library, gym, café or any place else that will allow you to mingle with the rest of your classmates. You may miss your friends and family back at home, or someone whom you can have a nice relaxing chat with, but that doesn’t mean you can’t do the same here.
Whether it is a student, a teacher, a staff member or a janitor, the world is full of open that you can open up to. Who knows? You can even become the best of friends in the coming months. The more people you connect with, the better it will be for you.
4. Stay connected with home – just not too much
As mentioned earlier, you can still get in touch with your friends and loved ones back at home, all with the omnipresent powers of social media. You can get through to them with Skype, Twitter, Facebook and WhatsApp. Just try your best not to indulge in it too much that your heart longs to go back.
These kinds of things tend to do that with our emotions. So ease up on that just a skooch.
5. Make space for yourself at school
College Homesickness can also come in a way that we miss out on our rooms back at home. This makes us feel out of place in the new area and that we need to find some place that gives us the same comforts as the ones at home.
You also feel disconnected due to the fact that you don’t know anyone there and don’t know you’re way around as well as you do in the place you grew up in. So what should you do here? Try to develop a routine that will help you get used to the new setting that you see before you.
6. It’s not the end of the world
Understand that it is not the end of everything you know. Your emotions will only get the best of you if you let them. The idea is to stay positive and realize that you are here to make something of yourself in life. You can still visit your family in the holidays and ensure that everything stays the way it does as you left it.
You are also here to grow up and embrace the world for what it can present you with. You alone get to call the shots and decide what is best for your life.
College life is all about doing the best you can on your own. You don’t have to depend on your parents all the time. In the end, you will need to be on your own.
